What Is the CAT Exam?
CAT stands for Common Admission Test. The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) conduct it every year. The score is used for admission into MBA and other management programs across India.
CAT is not just for IIM. Many other top colleges accept CAT scores:

Section 1 — VARC: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension
This section checks how well you read and understand written text. It also tests whether you can arrange sentences in a logical order.

Reading speed matters more than vocabulary in this section. Students who read slowly almost always run out of time before finishing VARC.
Section 2 — DILR: Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
This section gives you data in tables, charts, and puzzles. You read the data, understand it, and answer questions based on it.

Choosing the right sets to attempt is the most important skill in DILR. Not every set is equally solvable. Picking well saves 10 to 15 minutes in the actual exam.
Section 3 — QA: Quantitative Aptitude
This section tests your mathematical ability. Questions are based on class 10 and 12 level maths — but require speed and accuracy under time pressure.

Most CAT Quant questions need logical thinking more than complex formulas. Arithmetic alone is nearly 40% of the section — students who skip it give away the most marks.

SNAP has high time pressure. Speed and accuracy matter more than in CAT.

Here is how many marks you need to reach a particular percentile in CAT 2026. These numbers are based on historical CAT data and may vary slightly each year.

Three things stand out from this table:
- You do not need a perfect score to hit 99 percentile. 85+ overall gets you there.
- DILR is where most students drop marks. A 26+ in DILR puts you at 99 percentile in that section alone.
- A strong performance in two sections can compensate for a weaker third section.
Which IIM Can You Target Based on Your CAT 2026 Percentile?
There are 21 IIMs in India. Here is a simple guide to set a realistic target.

Scoring 99 percentile in CAT 2026 means finishing in the top 1% of over 3 lakh aspirants. You need approximately 85+ overall — 41+ in VARC, 26+ in DILR, and 32+ in QA.
