CAT 2027 Preparation for Beginners and Non-Engineers
Everything you need to know about CAT 2027 dates, eligibility, exam pattern and syllabus, and how to start your preparation from scratch.
CAT 2027: Exam Overview for Beginners and Non-Engineers
The Common Admission Test (CAT) is the entrance exam for the IIMs and most top MBA colleges in India. It is conducted every year by one of the IIMs on rotation, usually on the last Sunday of November. CAT 2027 will decide admissions for the 2028 to 2030 MBA batch.
CAT tests three skills: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Ability (QA). None of them needs an engineering background. Students from commerce, arts, science and engineering all take the same paper, which is why CAT preparation for non-engineers starts with the same thing as everyone else's: strong basics.
Open to every stream
B.Com, BBA, BA, B.Sc, B.Tech and any other recognised bachelor's degree.
No age or attempt limit
You can take CAT at any age and as many times as you like.
Quant is school-level
CAT Quant is built on Class 8 to 10 maths, not engineering maths.
CAT 2027 Important Dates
The official CAT 2027 schedule has not been released yet. Based on recent CAT cycles, students can use this tentative timeline to plan their preparation:
| Event | Expected period |
|---|---|
| CAT 2027 notification | Late July 2027 |
| Registration opens | Early August 2027 |
| Registration closes | Mid September 2027 |
| Admit card release | Early November 2027 |
| CAT 2027 exam | Last Sunday of November 2027 |
| Result | December 2027 or early January 2028 |
Starting CAT 2027 preparation in late 2026 gives a beginner about 12 months, enough time to build basics, finish the syllabus and take mocks without rushing.
CAT 2027 Eligibility Criteria
To appear for CAT 2027, you need a bachelor's degree with the minimum marks below. Your stream does not matter.
| Category | Minimum graduation marks |
|---|---|
| General / EWS / NC-OBC | 50% marks or equivalent CGPA |
| SC / ST / PwBD | 45% marks or equivalent CGPA |
Who is eligible to apply?
Graduates
Candidates with a recognised bachelor's degree and the required marks are eligible.
Final year students
Students in the final year of graduation, or awaiting results, can apply subject to conditions set by the IIMs.
Non-engineers
There is no requirement to have studied maths or engineering. Commerce, arts and science graduates are fully eligible.

CAT 2027 Exam Pattern
The CAT 2027 pattern will be announced with the notification. Recent CAT papers have followed this structure, with a fixed 40 minutes for each section:
| Section | Questions (approx.) | Time |
|---|---|---|
| VARC: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension | 24 | 40 minutes |
| DILR: Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning | 22 | 40 minutes |
| QA: Quantitative Ability | 22 | 40 minutes |
| Total | 68 | 120 minutes |
Each correct answer earns +3. A wrong multiple-choice answer costs −1, while wrong type-in-the-answer (TITA) questions carry no negative marking. A basic on-screen calculator is allowed. Because each section is timed separately, slow calculation or slow reading in one section cannot be made up in another.
CAT Syllabus: The Basics That Matter Most
CAT has no official syllabus, but past papers show which topics come up again and again. These are the foundations every beginner should be comfortable with before attempting CAT-level questions:
| Section | Core topics | Basic skill to build first |
|---|---|---|
| Quant | Arithmetic (percentages, ratios, profit and loss, time and work, averages), algebra, number system, geometry, modern maths | Fast mental calculation and comfort with school-level concepts |
| VARC | Reading comprehension, para jumbles, para summary, odd sentence out | Reading speed and finding the main idea without re-reading |
| DILR | Arrangements, tables and charts, games and tournaments, Venn diagrams | Turning conditions into a clear table or diagram |
Arithmetic has carried the largest share of CAT Quant questions in recent papers, which makes it the best place for a beginner to start.

CAT Preparation for Non-Engineers
Non-engineers can crack CAT, and they form a large share of every year's test takers. The usual gap is not ability but practice: many B.Com, BBA, BA and B.Sc students last studied algebra and geometry in school. Engineers tend to start ahead in Quant, while non-engineers often read faster and handle VARC more comfortably.
| Section | Common challenge for non-engineers | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Quant | Fear of maths, slow calculation, forgotten school concepts | Rebuild basics in order, starting with arithmetic and mental calculation |
| DILR | Not knowing where to start a set | Learn to organise information step by step before solving |
| VARC | Usually a strength | Keep reading daily and build speed under time pressure |
Best CAT strategy by background
CAT for commerce students (B.Com, BBA)
Percentages, profit and loss and data tables feel familiar. Focus your early effort on algebra, geometry and number system.
CAT for arts students (BA)
Reading comprehension is often your edge. Rebuild Quant from school-level concepts and learn DILR step by step.
CAT for science students (B.Sc)
You likely know the concepts but need CAT speed. Calculation shortcuts and timed practice close the gap fast.
How COACHIFY Prepares You for CAT 2027
Basics Builder: Where Your CAT Preparation Really Begins
Every student starts CAT preparation from a different point. A maths student may struggle with reading, while a non-maths student may understand a concept but take too long to calculate. Some can follow a DILR solution once it is explained, but cannot find the logic on their own.
That is why Basics Builder is the first stage of Coachify's CAT 2027 online course. It builds the skills that Quant, VARC and DILR depend on, so students don't carry the same weaknesses into harder, CAT-level questions.
Quant Essentials
Strengthens the calculation base behind CAT Quant and DI. Students start with Module 0: Magic Maths and practise percentages, ratios, fractions, roots and approximation until they are fast and accurate. Adaptive practice puts more attention on the topics that still need work.
VARC Essentials
Builds the reading skills CAT needs: speed, comprehension and handling different passage styles. It breaks habits such as re-reading or mentally translating every sentence, and tracking shows exactly where speed or understanding drops.
DILR Essentials
Develops the thinking needed to solve a set independently. Instead of jumping into hard puzzles, students learn to read the information, find a starting point, arrange the conditions and manage different possibilities until they reach the answer.

Coachify Foundation: Complete CAT Syllabus Preparation
Once you master the basic calculations and reading habits in Basics Builder, the next step is to build an unshakeable CAT foundation across Quant, DILR, and VARC.
Coachify does not only focus on completing the syllabus. The goal is to find out where a student gets stuck, why they get stuck, and what needs to change in their approach.
A student may know a quant concept but still choose a lengthy method. In DILR, they may understand the set but fail to structure the information properly. In VARC, they may read the passage but still struggle to eliminate trap options. The Foundation stage works on these exact thinking flaws.
Structured Theory & Shortcuts
Comprehensive concept coverage from basics to advanced, covering all 5 quant modules, all DILR set types, and comprehensive VARC passages.
Live Mentorship & Doubt Solving
Interactive sessions and 1-on-1 support to diagnose specific problem areas and accelerate learning velocity.
COACHIFY 99+ Advanced CAT-Level Preparation
Once you finish the CAT syllabus, the biggest challenge is applying concepts flawlessly under strict time limits. Students often know the formula but waste precious minutes on deceptively hard Quant questions or pick the wrong DILR set.
This stage bridges that gap. Through intensive practice of QA 1000, LRDI 100, and dense VARC passages, students learn high-yield question selection, shortcut execution, and composure under pressure.
QA 1000 & LRDI 100 Mastersets
Curated collection of challenging, CAT-standard questions designed to push your reasoning to the 99th percentile.
Strategic Selection Training
Learn how to identify 100% solvable sets within 2 minutes and avoid negative marking traps.
Mocks and Analysis: Turning Knowledge into Percentiles
Taking mocks without scientific analysis is the #1 reason students plateau. Coachify provides an AI-powered mock interface mirroring the actual CAT test environment with granular section analytics.
Identify time sinks, unforced errors, question-skipping efficiency, and percentile benchmarks against thousands of serious CAT aspirants across India.
Real CAT Interface Simulation
Full-length national mocks with sectional timers, on-screen calculator, and actual percentile predictors.
AI Diagnostic Reports
Detailed heatmaps showing accuracy by topic, time spent per question, and recommended remedial practice.
12-Month CAT 2027 Preparation Plan for Beginners
A simple roadmap for students starting CAT 2027 preparation from scratch:
| Stage | When | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Build the basics | Month 1 | Calculation speed, reading habits, DILR set-making |
| 2. Learn the full syllabus | Months 2 to 6 | Every CAT topic in depth, with practice after each concept |
| 3. Push for 99+ | Months 7 to 9 | Difficult Quant, tough DILR sets, dense RC passages |
| 4. Mocks and analysis | Months 10 to 12 | Full-length mocks, mistake analysis, revision of weak topics |
Working professionals and college students can follow the same order at 1.5 to 2 hours a day. What matters most is finishing the basics before moving to CAT-level practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs
What is the CAT 2027 Basics Builder course?
CAT 2027 Basics Builder is Coachify's beginner course for CAT 2027. It teaches the basics of all three CAT sections, Quant, VARC and DILR, from scratch. It costs ₹1,499 per person when you join with a friend (₹2,998 alone), is fully self-paced and online, and is designed to finish in about 1 month at 1.5 hours a day.
Who teaches the Basics Builder course?
Quant and DILR are taught by Mohit Matolia (Mohit Sir), who scored 99.4 percentile in CAT and has mentored 5,000+ students. VARC is taught by Pratibha Ma'am. Every concept is explained in simple language, starting from the basics.
Is Basics Builder enough to crack CAT 2027?
No, and we won't pretend it is. Basics Builder builds the foundation that CAT preparation stands on. To reach a high percentile you will still need the full syllabus, advanced practice and mock tests, which the CAT 2027 Pro Full Course covers.
How is Basics Builder different from the CAT 2027 Pro Full Course?
Basics Builder covers only the basics of Quant, VARC and DILR, for ₹1,499 per person. The Pro Full Course (₹29,999) covers the whole journey: basics, the full syllabus, 99+ percentile practice, test series, crash course, books and 1-on-1 mentoring. If you upgrade later, the fee you paid is adjusted in the Pro price.
Who should join the Basics Builder course?
Join if you are new to CAT, find Quant or reading difficult, or have been preparing from scattered free videos without a plan. It suits college students, working professionals and non-engineers (B.Com, BBA, BA, B.Sc) who want strong basics before serious CAT preparation.
Can a non-engineer or a student weak in maths prepare for CAT?
Yes. Around 40 to 45% of CAT takers are non-engineers, and many go on to score high percentiles. What usually holds them back is Quant basics, not ability. Basics Builder starts from school-level concepts like percentages, ratios and simple equations, and builds up step by step.
Do I need to study NCERT or school maths books before starting CAT?
No. Basics Builder covers the school-level maths that CAT actually tests, in the order you need it. You don't have to guess which textbook chapters matter or spend weeks on topics CAT never asks.
I'm not confident in English. Will VARC be hard to follow?
No. The VARC lessons start with how to read a passage, find its main idea and handle tough words, with simple explanations. Reading Speed Booster drills then build your speed gradually, so you stop reading the same paragraph two or three times.
I already scored 85+ percentile in mocks. Should I take Basics Builder?
Probably not. If your basics are already strong, you will gain more from advanced practice such as QA 1000, LRDI 100 and RC 100, or the CAT 2027 Pro Full Course. Basics Builder is built for students starting from zero or with weak foundations.
I attempted CAT 2026 and my basics let me down. Will this help for CAT 2027?
Yes, if weak concepts or slow calculation cost you marks. Basics Builder rebuilds Quant, VARC and DILR from the ground up, so your CAT 2027 preparation starts on a stronger base instead of repeating the same gaps.
What topics does Basics Builder cover?
Quant: arithmetic, algebra, number system, geometry and modern maths basics, starting with Module 0: Magic Maths for fast calculation. VARC: reading passages, reading speed, para jumbles and summaries. DILR: arrangements, tables, data charts and simple puzzles. You can download the full syllabus free from this page.
How many practice questions are included?
The Quant section alone has 3,150+ practice questions along with additional practice questions on an adaptive platform that starts easy and gets harder as you improve. You can download the full syllabus free from this page.
Is it only video lectures?
No. Along with lectures you get a tracking dashboard for progress and daily streaks, Quant Adaptive Practice, the Reading Speed Booster and the DILR Booster. These tools make you practise actively instead of only watching videos.
Will Basics Builder help with XAT, SNAP, NMAT or CMAT too?
Yes, for the basics. These exams test similar Quant, verbal and logical reasoning skills, so the foundation you build here carries over. Exam-specific practice and mocks are still needed for each exam.
How many hours a day do I need for Basics Builder?
About 1.5 hours a day. At that pace most students finish the course in around 1 month. Because it is self-paced, you can go faster or slower to fit around college or work.
Are the classes live or recorded?
Basics Builder is recorded and fully self-paced. There are no fixed class timings, so you never build up a backlog. You can rewatch any lesson as many times as you need.
How long will I have access to the course?
Your access is valid till 31 March 2028. That covers CAT 2027, its results and the interview season after it.
Can I study on my phone?
Yes. You can study on your phone or laptop, wherever you are.
When should I start preparing for CAT 2027?
Now is the best time. CAT 2027 is expected in late November 2027, which gives you about a year. Spending the first month on basics with Basics Builder makes the rest of your preparation faster and less stressful.
What is the fee for Basics Builder?
The fee is ₹1,499 per person when two students join together using the pool option. If you join alone, the fee is ₹2,998. Both are one-time payments with access till 31 March 2028.
How does the pool option work?
Two students join together and each pays ₹1,499 instead of ₹2,998, saving ₹1,499 each. Each of you gets your own login, your own progress tracking and full access to the course.
If I upgrade to Pro later, will I lose what I paid?
No. If you upgrade to the CAT 2027 Pro Full Course, the fee you paid for Basics Builder is adjusted in the Pro price, so you only pay the difference.
Can I watch a lecture before I pay?
Yes. Free demo lectures for Quant, DILR and VARC are on this page. Watch one to see if the teaching style works for you before you enroll.
Is there a refund policy?
Yes, students who score 99+ percentile in CAT 2027 get a 50% refund, and 99.9+ percentile gets a 100% refund, subject to the eligibility rules.
How will my doubts be solved?
This course includes 24/7 AI doubt support.
There is a lot of free CAT content on YouTube. Why should I pay for this?
Free content gives you videos but no order, no practice plan and no tracking. Basics Builder gives you one step-by-step path, practice after every lesson and a dashboard that shows what to study next, with access until 31 March 2028.
I've already paid for a coaching that didn't work for me. Why trust another course?
That worry is fair. That's why Basics Builder offers a ₹1,499 per-person pool option, and why you can watch the free demo lectures first. If the teaching clicks, you can upgrade later without losing what you paid.
Can I talk to someone before enrolling?
Yes. Book a free 1-on-1 counselling call using the form on this page, or tap Talk to a Mentor. We'll help you decide if Basics Builder is the right start for you.
