Linear equations involving one or two unknowns appear frequently in problems. A linear equation is defined as one where each variable is raised only to the first power — no squares, cubes, or higher powers. Occasionally, we encounter problems with three equations and three unknowns. In general, to solve for a certain number of variables, we need the same number of equations. That is, to find values for two unknowns, we need two equations (or two conditions provided in the problem), and for three unknowns, three equations (or three distinct conditions) are required.

Solving the equations is usually straightforward. The real challenge lies in framing the correct equations based on the problem. Once the equations are correctly set up, solving them is relatively easy. In this chapter, we will focus on problems where the number of first-degree (linear) equations matches the number of unknowns. In later chapters, we will explore second-degree equations (Quadratic Equations) and also look into situations where the number of equations is fewer than the number of variables — under the chapter titled Special Equations.
