How Hard Is It to Score 99 Percentile in CAT Quant?

A 99 percentile in CAT Quant is challenging, but it does not mean solving the entire section.

The score required for 99 percentile changes significantly with the difficulty of the paper and CAT's normalization process. CAT 2023, for example, required fewer marks for the same percentile than CAT 2022 because the QA section was considerably tougher.

So, instead of asking: “How many questions do I need to attempt?”

A better question is: “How many of the right questions can I solve accurately within 40 minutes?”

That distinction matters.

There is no permanent score that guarantees a 99 percentile in CAT Quant.

For CAT 2023, post-result analysis placed the QA 99 percentile scaled score at 28.18, compared with about 33 in CAT 2022. The same analysis showed 98 percentile at 24.31 in 2023 versus about 29 in 2022.

The lesson is simple: do not prepare for one magic score such as 30 marks. Prepare to recognize the most doable questions and solve them accurately, whatever difficulty CAT gives you.

Why Is Your CAT Quant Score Not Improving?

If your Quant score is stuck, solving another 500 random questions may not fix it. First identify why you are losing marks.

Two students scoring the same marks can therefore need completely different preparation. One needs to relearn a concept. Another needs timed practice. 1. Strengthen the Basics

If percentages, ratios, fractions, calculations or basic equations take too much time, fix them before moving to difficult CAT problems. The faster these basic operations become, the more mental bandwidth you have for the actual logic of the question.

2. Learn the Concept, Then Apply It

Knowing a formula is only the beginning. CAT tests whether you can recognize where that concept is hidden inside an unfamiliar question. After learning a topic, solve different variations instead of repeating the same question type.

3. Solve Topic-Wise CAT PYQs

Once a concept is clear, move to CAT previous year questions from that topic. PYQs show you:

• how CAT frames the concept,

• how difficult the application can become,

• which approaches save time, and

• whether your concept understanding actually works in CAT-level questions.

4. Move to Timed Practice

When you can comfortably solve a topic, start putting a clock on it.

Don't only ask: “Was my answer correct?”

“How much time did I take?”
“Could I have solved it differently?”
“Was this question worth attempting?”
