That does not necessarily mean you are weak in DILR.

For most students, the problem appears somewhere else: they select the wrong set, take too long to understand the structure, get stuck halfway, or keep solving a set even after it has become clear that it is consuming too much time.

That is why DILR preparation should not be about solving hundreds of random sets.

A better preparation cycle is:

Understand the Set → Select Smartly → Structure the Information → Solve Under Time → Analyse the Decision

The goal for a 99 percentile is not to become capable of solving every puzzle. It is to become better at deciding which sets deserve your 40 minutes.

How Hard Is It to Score 99 Percentile in CAT DILR?

DILR is one of the most unpredictable CAT sections, with difficulty changing significantly from year to year. That is why the score required for 99 percentile has also moved significantly. In one year, around 27–30 marks may be enough; in another year, the same percentile may require close to 38 marks.

This tells you something important: preparing with a fixed target such as “I need to solve exactly two sets” can be misleading.

Your real target should be:

Can I identify the most workable sets quickly and solve them with high accuracy?

The historical score data makes this much easier to understand.

What Does the 5-Year Trend Tell You?

Instead of remembering every number, remember the pattern:

[2021: ~ (25–29)]   [2022: ~30]   [2023: ~27] [2024: ~38] [2025: ~30]

The score required for 99 percentile changes because the paper changes.

So do not prepare for any specific number or target number of sets. Prepare to identify the best opportunities available in that particular paper.

Why Is Your DILR Score Not Improving?

Most students know they are weak in DILR, but they do not know where exactly the weakness begins. That distinction matters because every problem needs a different solution.

What Happens in the Mock

What You Actually Need to Fix

I don't know how to begin.

Entry point and structuring

“I understand once I see the solution.”

Independent reasoning is missing

“I chose the wrong first set.”

Set selection

“I can solve it, but I take too long.”

Practice under pressure

This is why simply solving more sets does not always improve your score. Before starting another set, first understand what type of mistake keeps repeating.

How Should You Prepare for 99 Percentile in CAT DILR?

Start by learning how to convert information into something usable.

A long paragraph may need to become a table, grid, arrangement, diagram or set of cases before you can solve it efficiently.

Then expose yourself to different kinds of sets instead of becoming comfortable with only one pattern:

Arrangements → Games & Tournaments, → Scheduling → Matrix Sets → Routes → Quant-Based Puzzles → Tables →  Charts → Caselets

Once the basics are stable, move to actual CAT sets.

This is where topic-wise DILR PYQs become valuable because they show you how CAT has actually tested these structures.

The Real Skill: Set Selection

A set being solvable does not automatically mean it should be solved. That is where many students lose their DILR section.

You might spend eight minutes on one set. You then realize it is complex and move on. After the mock, you may find another set was much easier.

Set selection therefore needs to be practised separately.

Before committing to a set, look for:

  • how much information is given,

  • whether the structure is familiar,

  • how many cases may be required,

  • whether deductions appear quickly,

  • and whether the set seems worth the time.

The skill is not simply “Can I solve this?”

It is:

“Should I solve this now?”

When PYQs Become Manageable but New Sets Still Trouble You

This is usually the next stage of DILR preparation.

You may become comfortable with previous-year sets because you have already seen similar patterns. But CAT can present the same underlying logic in a completely unfamiliar form.

At this stage, you do not necessarily need another concept lecture. You need exposure to unfamiliar, difficult sets under controlled practice conditions.

This is where Coachify's LRDI 100 works as an advanced practice layer.

It includes 100 handpicked difficult and very difficult LRDI sets, separate from PYQs, with expert video explanations by Mohit Sir.

Students can first use Practice Mode to understand the logic without rushing, then move to Test Mode once they are ready to work under time pressure.

Why LRDI 100 Helps at This Stage

The value is not simply that it contains another 100 sets. The real value is that you can attempt a set independently and then answer:

Did I choose the right starting point?
Was my structure efficient?
Did I spend too much time before making the first useful deduction?
Could the same set have been solved with a cleaner approach?

After each attempt, the dashboard shows accuracy, percentile, time, and performance by question. The video solution shows a mentor’s approach, so you can compare it with yours.

That comparison is what gradually changes your solving process.

Attempt → Analyse → Compare Approach → Correct → Attempt Again

If You Have Around 2 Months Left

With two months remaining, your preparation should become more selective.

Phase

What to Focus On

Weeks 1-2

Recent PYQs + identify strong and weak set types

Weeks 3-4

Mixed difficult sets + timed practice

Weeks 5-6

DILR sectionals + set-selection analysis

Weeks 7-8

Full mocks + error review + repeated weak patterns

Do not spend these weeks trying to learn every possible DILR puzzle ever created.

Focus on improving three things:

Which set to choose → How to structure it → When to leave it

That improvement transfers directly to the exam.

What Should You Analyse After Every DILR Mock?

Do not stop at the sectional score and feel demotivated.

Ask:

1. Did I choose the right first set?
2. How much time did I waste on the wrong set?
3. Did my table or diagram simplify the information?
4. Which doable set did I fail to identify?

Your mock analysis should tell you what decision needs to improve in the next mock.

Otherwise, you may simply repeat the same mistake with a different puzzle.

The 99 Percentile DILR Framework

Structure → Variety  → PYQs → Set Selection → Difficult Sets → Timed Practice→ Sectionals → Mocks → Analysis

The biggest shift happens when you stop judging your DILR ability by:

“Could I eventually solve the set?”

and start judging it by:

“Could I identify, structure and solve the right set within CAT conditions?”

That is the skill a strong DILR score ultimately demands.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no fixed number of sets that guarantees 99 percentile because CAT DILR difficulty changes every year. Focus on identifying the most workable sets and solving them accurately rather than chasing a fixed attempt count.
Mock conditions add time pressure and force faster decisions about set selection. Practise not only solving sets, but also choosing the right set early and knowing when to leave an unproductive one.
Start with the set where the information is easier to organise, the structure looks clearer and useful deductions appear quickly. Do not choose a set only because the topic looks familiar.
If you are spending several minutes without making a useful deduction, or the casework keeps expanding without clear progress, moving to another set may be the better decision.
Attempt the set independently before watching the solution. Identify exactly where your reasoning stopped, then compare your structure and approach with the expert solution instead of only checking the final answer.
PYQs are essential because they show the actual CAT level and set style, but they are limited in number. After completing PYQs, practise unfamiliar and difficult sets so that you can handle new structures under exam pressure.
Prioritise recent CAT PYQs, mixed difficult sets, timed sectionals and detailed mock analysis. Spend less time collecting new material and more time improving set selection, structuring, speed and accuracy.
First make your solving process cleaner using the right tables, grids, cases or diagrams. Once you can solve sets reliably, introduce timed practice gradually and analyse where unnecessary time is being spent.
Check whether you selected the right first set, how much time you spent on an unproductive set, whether your representation was efficient, and which doable set you failed to identify.
One of the biggest mistakes is spending too much time trying to force a difficult set. A set may eventually be solvable, but that does not mean it is the right set to attempt within the 40-minute section.
Coachify LRDI 100 is an advanced practice program for serious CAT aspirants targeting 99 percentile. It includes 100 handpicked difficult and very difficult non-PYQ sets with expert video explanations by Mohit Sir, Practice Mode, Timed Test Mode and detailed performance analysis covering accuracy, time, percentile and question-wise performance.
LRDI 100 is most useful after you understand the basic DILR structures and have worked through CAT PYQs. It is designed for the next stage, where you need difficult unfamiliar sets, better set selection and stronger timed performance.
PYQs teach you how CAT has tested DILR in the past, while LRDI 100 gives you fresh difficult and very difficult sets that you have not already seen. This helps you build independent reasoning instead of becoming comfortable only with familiar patterns.
Use Practice Mode when you want to understand the set deeply and improve your solving approach. Move to Timed Test Mode when you are ready to work on set selection, speed and exam execution under pressure.
Yes. You do not need to solve every DILR set to reach a high percentile. The better strategy is to identify the right sets, solve them accurately and protect your time by leaving low-value or overly complex sets early.
